7 Danish Military Secrets You Were Not Meant to Know – Until Now

Wild secrets.

Denmark might not be the first country that comes to mind when you talk about military power and covert projects, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t cases that have been kept from the public eye for decades. Some were exposed by coincidence, others through the persistent investigative work of journalists, and some were only confirmed by the military itself long after they took place.

Here are seven of the most surprising military secrets from little Denmark that you (maybe) have never heard about before.

1. The Thule Base Nuclear Accident – and What Was Never Found

In 1968, an American B-52 bomber carrying four hydrogen bombs crashed near the Thule Base in Greenland. Officially, most of the cleanup was carried out quickly, but one thing vanished: one of the bomb’s uranium capsules. To this day, it’s unclear whether it was ever found. Denmark, which was supposed to be a nuclear-free zone, was suddenly thrust into the dark corners of the Cold War.

Secret NATO Bunkers Under Jutland

While Jutland’s fields stood peaceful and empty, underground command centers and emergency management rooms were being dug during the Cold War – including under Finderup near Viborg. They were so classified that even the local police were kept in the dark. The bunkers are still there, and a few have been opened to the public today.

Danish Surveillance of the Soviet Union – Via Bornholm

Bornholm served as a strategic listening post, and during the Cold War, the island was on the front line against the east with both radar and signal intelligence. The Danish installations intercepted radio communications, aircraft movements, and more – sharing everything directly with the Americans. It was from here that Soviet bombers’ takeoffs in the Baltics could be “heard.”

Operation “Gladio” – Denmark’s Secret Guerilla Army

After World War II, NATO secretly established so-called “stay behind” groups in case of a Soviet invasion. Denmark also had its own – trained citizens, with hidden weapon caches and a mission: resistance in concealment. It was not until the 1990s that it was revealed that Denmark had been part of this secret structure.

American Nuclear Weapons on Danish Soil – Without Public Knowledge

Although Denmark officially prohibited nuclear weapons on its territory in peacetime, there were several instances where silent permissions were given to American ships and planes armed with just that. Several former ministers have later admitted that they “looked the other way” to keep the Americans pleased.

The Defense’s “Unofficial” UFO Archive

Denmark’s defense had been receiving reports about unidentified flying objects for decades. Until 2009, there was actually a small office in the Air Tactical Command that received, recorded, and analyzed reports from both pilots and citizens. Many of these were only made public a few years ago – with the obligatory black redactions, of course.

Danish Elite Soldiers in Combat – Before It Was Official

Before Denmark officially participated in international military operations in the 1990s, Danish special forces were reportedly already used in covert operations and as advisors in the Middle East and Africa. No one would confirm it back then, but several former special forces soldiers have today revealed that Denmark was more active in the global shadow war than anyone knew.
