You don’t have to be a racing driver or mechanic to look after your car properly. Yet some everyday driving habits could be wrecking your engine faster than you realise. Here are the seven most common mistakes car owners make – often without knowing the costly consequences.

Cold Starts and High Revs

Do you start your car and immediately hit the accelerator? That’s a fast track to engine wear. Engine oil needs to warm up before it can protect effectively – give it a minute or two idling.

Delaying Oil Changes

Too many drivers stretch their oil-change intervals. Old oil loses its lubricating properties, leaving harmful deposits behind, which can ultimately choke the engine.

Skipping Regular Servicing

“It drives fine” is no excuse. Small issues become major problems when ignored. Forgetting a timing belt change, for example, could cost you a whole new engine.

Driving on a Low Fuel Tank

Letting your fuel level drop below a quarter tank risks damaging the fuel pump and sucking dirt and water from the bottom of the tank.

Lugging the Engine at Low RPM

Cruising at 30 mph in fifth gear might seem economical, but it actually strains and chokes the engine, causing unnecessary stress.

Using the Wrong Engine Oil

Cheap oil or incorrect viscosity can do more harm than good. Always stick to the manufacturer’s recommended oil, or you risk overheating and excess wear.

Ignoring Warning Lights

When your engine warning light illuminates, it’s not just decorative. Waiting too long can turn a minor, inexpensive fix into a hefty garage bill.
