End of a British Motorcycle Legend: CCM Bows Out
After 50 years of hand-built dream bikes, it’s the end of the road for Clews Competition Machines.
An Iconic Name in Trouble
CCM, or Clews Competition Machines, has been a name that set enthusiasts’ hearts racing since the 1970s. Founded by motocross rider and engineer Alan Clews, the company became known for its lightweight motorcycles full of character and flair. But after years of mounting challenges and declining production, the curtain has now fallen. CCM has officially entered administration.
A Dream Extinguished
In 2021, CCM partnered with Pitalia Capital, led by entrepreneur Anil Pitalia, and many saw this as a sign of brighter days ahead. However, the investment couldn’t change the company’s course. The much-anticipated retro adventure bike, Project X, was cancelled, and the workforce was reduced from 50 to just 12 employees. In 2023, production dwindled to a mere 150 bikes – half of its usual annual output.
A Legacy in Motorcycle History
Although the company has now reached its end, CCM leaves behind a legacy of passion and unique machines. “This is a challenging time for everyone involved – our dedicated team, our loyal riders, and the wider CCM community that has supported us over the years,” a spokesperson told TheBusinessDesk.com. “We are proud of the motorcycles we’ve built and the legacy we’ve shared with so many.”
A Cult Brand Beyond the Machines
CCM was never just a manufacturer. It stood as a symbol of boldness, creativity, and British craftsmanship, with each model bearing the mark of zeal and ambition. That the brand is now closing its doors marks not just a financial collapse but also the loss of a cultural cornerstone in the world of motorcycles.
