Technology once confined to Hollywood scripts and futuristic daydreams has now become a reality.

In China, two companies have been legally authorized to transport passengers using autonomous flying drone taxis.

Sightseeing in the Sky

China has taken a major step toward making flying taxis a daily mode of transport.

For the first time, local authorities have granted companies permission to operate autonomous passenger drones.

Two companies, EHang Holdings and Hefei Hey Airlines, have received operator certificates from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

This means that, as of March 30, 2025, they can officially transport people through the air using drone taxis, according to the South China Morning Post.

With these key certifications secured, the plan is to begin with panoramic city flights—an initial step toward building a completely new economic sector: the so-called low-altitude economy.

We’re talking flying vehicles, airships, and drones delivering packages faster than you can click “order.”

The Future of Airborne Transport Is Closer Than You Think

With their operator certificates now in hand, both companies are authorized to offer passenger flights using unmanned drones.

The first planned routes will be aerial city sightseeing. So if you’ve ever dreamed of taking a selfie with the skyline behind you at 500 feet, now’s your chance.

The operator certificate was the final regulatory hurdle these drones had to clear.

Before that, they had already obtained type, production, and airworthiness certifications.

From Tourist Flights to National Transport Plans

According to a report from Citic Securities, low-end tourism may be the starting point of an entirely new industry.

“EHang’s sightseeing tours could accelerate the development of the sector,” the report states.

This development not only creates new opportunities in urban tourism but could also revolutionize the entire aviation industry in China.

As the government’s official newspaper reports, this is yet another step in China’s strategy to modernize urban transportation.
