A bureaucratic hurdle removed

New legislation in the UK came into effect at the end of May, allowing private car owners and businesses to install electric vehicle chargers without having to apply for planning permission. This makes switching to electric vehicles easier and cheaper – while also easing the burden on the public charging infrastructure.

Previously, a complex and time-consuming process involving paperwork and fees was required. Now, it’s a clear path forward, enabling EV owners to gain access to home or workplace charging far more swiftly.

Experts call it a breakthrough

The decision has been met with praise from within the EV industry. David Martell, CEO of Andersen EV, commented: “The government’s decision to remove the planning permission requirement for EV charger installations is a significant step forward in accelerating the UK’s transition to electric vehicles. It allows homeowners and businesses to establish charging infrastructure more swiftly and cost-effectively.”

He also emphasised that the impact extends beyond infrastructure: “It empowers people to choose solutions that fit their aesthetic preferences and day-to-day needs.”

EV market grows – and infrastructure keeps up

According to ZapMap, there are already 80,998 public charging points across the UK. In the past month alone, 1,344 new chargers were added, and over 7,000 have been introduced in 2025. The government’s target is to reach 300,000 chargers by 2030.

With the new rules, the number of private and semi-public chargers is expected to soar, as it’s now far easier to take matters into your own hands.

Financial support for installations

The Department for Transport already offers grants to support the installation of home chargers. Flat owners and tenants can receive up to £350 off the cost, making the investment even more appealing.

Thanks to the new legislation, more people are likely to take advantage of these grants without being hampered by red tape. With a simple regulatory change, better conditions for sustainable mobility have been created nationwide.

The policy shift is already being put to the test. It’s now up to drivers to seize the opportunity and take the next step towards a greener future.
