Canada’s ruling Liberal Party held onto power in Monday’s election, though it’s still too early to say whether they will form a majority government, CTV News reported, citing Reuters and News.ro.

In his first address following the win, Liberal Party leader Mark Carney spoke about the serious threat posed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies.

Carney Vows to Protect Canada

Mark Carney, speaking after the announcement of the Liberal Party’s victory, pledged to work with all Canadians to develop the country and protect Canada.

“America wants our land, our resources, our water. These aren’t empty threats. Trump is trying to destroy us so that America can own us. That will never happen,” Carney emphasized.

According to local media, the Liberal Party led by Mark Carney is set to win Canada’s parliamentary election, AFP reported Monday, following a campaign focused on the threats posed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Just a few months ago, the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, had a strong chance of returning to power after ten years under Justin Trudeau’s leadership.

But Trump’s return to the White House and his unprecedented offensive against Canada — with tariffs and threats of annexation — changed the landscape, AFP reports.

Minority Government Likely

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre congratulated Prime Minister Mark Carney on the victory, though he emphasized that Carney would only be leading a minority government.

He also indicated that he has no intention of stepping down as Conservative leader despite the defeat, according to The Guardian.

“It will be an honor to continue fighting for you and being an advocate for your cause as we move forward,” Poilievre told his supporters.

“We gained over 20 seats, and we secured the highest share of the vote our party has received since 1988.”

Final Result May Take Time

Carney had hoped for a strong mandate to confront President Trump’s tariffs and threats of annexation, but according to public broadcaster CBC, the Liberals had not yet secured the 172 seats needed for a majority.

The final outcome may take time, as it could depend on results from British Columbia, Canada’s westernmost province, where polls closed the latest.

Carney promised a tough stance on Washington’s tariffs and stated that Canada would need to invest billions to reduce its dependence on the U.S.

However, the center-right Conservatives, who campaigned on change after more than nine years of Liberal rule, showed unexpected strength.

Parliament holds 343 seats, and if Carney ends up with only a minority, he will need to negotiate with other parties to stay in power.

Minority governments in Canada rarely last more than two and a half years.
