How Long Should You Wait to Mow the Lawn After Rain?

Take care of your lawn quality.

Rainy days can be a welcome break for both people and plants, but they also mean you should think twice before grabbing the lawnmower. It may be tempting to mow the grass as soon as the sun peeks through, but doing so can be harmful to both your lawn and your equipment.

Why It’s Important to Wait

When the soil is wet, it becomes soft and susceptible to damage. At the same time, the grass becomes heavy, pliable, and difficult to cut cleanly. Mowing too soon can lead to several issues:

  • Damaged grass: Wet grass lays down and gets torn up instead of being cut cleanly.
  • Ruined soil structure: The wheels of the lawnmower can leave marks and compact the soil.
  • Uneven mowing: Clumps of wet grass stick to the machine and leave uneven tracks.
  • Wear on the machine: Wet grass quickly accumulates under the deck and can lead to rust or a clogged blade.

How Long Should You Wait?

It depends on how much rain has fallen and how well the soil drains.

  • In case of light rain: Wait at least 24 hours, especially if sunshine and wind can help dry it out.
  • In case of heavy rain or clay soil: Wait 48 hours or more. The soil should feel firm and dry enough to walk on without becoming muddy.

A good benchmark is to take a walk on the lawn. If your shoes get dirty or you leave footprints, it’s too early. Wait until the soil feels dry and firm.

What to Do If You Must Mow?

In special cases where you can’t avoid it, take precautions:

  • Use a sharp blade to minimize tugging and pulling on the moist blades.
  • Mow higher than usual to protect the grass.
  • Thoroughly clean the lawnmower afterward to prevent buildup and rust.

Use Rainy Weather Wisely

Even if you can’t mow the lawn, you can still work on it:

  • Spreading grass seeds just before rain ensures good germination.
  • After rain, the soil is moist and suitable for fertilizing.
  • Soft soil makes it easier to remove weeds or moss.
